Day 1: Fes to Merzouga via Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley
Start your desert trip by getting picked up from your riad in the early morning. Leave the city and head towards Ifrane, where you can stop for a coffee break and admire the surroundings. Then, continue your journey towards the Middle Atlas Mountains, where you can spot some Barbary monkeys at the cedar forest of Azrou. Next, drive to Merzouga via Midelt and along the Ziz Valley, a beautiful valley full of palm trees. Reach Merzouga in the evening and stay in a beautiful riad.
Day 2: Full Day to Explore the Sahara Desert
Begin your exploration day of the Merzouga desert after enjoying a delicious breakfast in your riad. Start by visiting a small town named Khamlia, where you can listen to the unique Gnawa music played by the locals who are originally from the south of Africa. Then, head off-road to M’Fis, an abandoned village with mines of Galena, a mineral used for Mascara in the old days. Finally, visit a nomadic family living behind the Erg Chebbi Dunes near the borders and experience their traditional Berber lifeztyle with a cup of tea. You can also try Berber pizza for lunch. In the evening, ride camels to your camp while watching a breathtaking sunset. Enjoy dinner and relax around a campfire under the starry sky. The staff of the camp will play the drums for you and even teach you how to play them.
Day 3: Merzouga to Boumalne Dades via Todra Gorges
Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise view. After breakfast, drive to Boumalne Gorge via Rissani, Erfoud, the oasis of Tinghir, and Todra Gorges with many stops along the way. Have dinner and spend the night in a hotel in Boumalne.
Day 4: Boumalne Gorge to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then drive along the road of 1000 Kasbahs to Ouarzazate. You can visit the Atlas Studios or take some photos from outside. Next, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, famous for being used for filming many popular movies like Gladiator. After lunch, continue driving to Marrakech while crossing the High Atlas Mountains and passing by many Moroccan Berber villages.
