Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Gorges via High Atlas Mountains and Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah
Your tour starts with a morning departure from your Marrakech accommodation. As you travel through the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll see traditional Berber villages, stunning views of the mountains, and stop at some panoramas for photo opportunities.
Arrive at Ait Ben Haddou village and visit the antique Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-protected site since 1987. The kasbah has been used as a location for several famous movies shot in Morocco, including Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and parts of Game of Thrones and O Clone. After lunch, continue to Dades Gorges, passing through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses. Once you arrive at Dades Gorges, you can visit the rock formations called “monkey toes” before heading to your accommodation.
Day 2: Dades Gorges to Merzouga Desert via Todra Gorge
After breakfast, drive along the Todra River, which is filled with palm groves and Berber villages, to the stunning Todra Gorge in Tinghir. Then, travel to the Merzouga desert.
Before arriving at Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, your driver/guide will suggest visiting a traditional Berber shop. Here, you can take some pictures wearing a Berber outfit for free and purchase something if you wish (scarves are recommended for the desert). It’s not obligatory to buy anything; the primary goal of the shop is to promote the Berber culture. You can let your driver/guide know if you’re not interested in the shop.
When you arrive in Merzouga, go on a camel ride into the desert to watch the sunset over the dunes and try sandboarding. Spend the night in a luxury desert camp, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and experience the magic of the Sahara at night.
Day 3: Full day to explore the Sahara Desert
Wake up early to watch a beautiful sunrise from the nearest dune. After breakfast, start exploring the Merzouga desert. Use a 4×4 SUV to reach the Berber Nomads behind the dunes, where you’ll learn about the Berber lifeztyle and culture. You’ll also visit a small deserted village called Mefis, listen to Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, and visit the Lake of Birds if it’s full.
After lunch, check in at your riad and enjoy some leisure time. You can swim or take a stroll to the nearby dunes. In the evening, enjoy dinner before spending the night at your riad or choose to spend the night at the desert camp again.
Day 4: Merzouga to Fez via Ziz Valley and Ifrane
After breakfast at your riad, travel to Fes. On the way, stop for a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley and have lunch in Midelt or somewhere along the way. You may see some Barbary apes in the cedar forest of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Take a break in Ifrane before heading to Fes. Your Marrakech to Fes desert tour ends when you’re dropped off at your riad.
